Dukhan English School (DES) is located in Dukhan, approximately one hour's drive from Qatar's capital, Doha. It occupies purpose-built accommodation on a spacious site that includes two large grass sports fields. The School has been operating since 1954 and is the oldest British Curriculum School in Qatar. It is entirely owned and managed by QP and reflects the Corporation’s commitment to its employees’ well-being and benefit. The school caters for 1,300 students from 3 to 18 years old and there are over 160 teachers and support staff, predominantly British and Commonwealth trained. The school is managed through five Key Stages: Key Stage 1 Age 3-7 (Nursery to Yr 2); Key Stage 2 Age 7-11 (Yrs 3 - 6); Key Stage 3 Age 11-14 (Yrs 7- 9); Key Stage 4 Age 14-16 (Yrs 10 -11); Sixth Form Age 16–18 (Yrs 12 – 13).  Most of the students are children of QP employees, although a number of supporting companies and members of the local community are also represented. The school is recognised by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and Edexcel as an examination centre. Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form level teach the full range of subjects expected by the British National Curriculum. There are accelerated groups of early entry GCSEs in Mathematics. Classes are small, with generally no more than 25 children. The school keenly promotes inter-school competition and is involved in the Qatar Private Primary Schools Sports Association (QPPSSA) and Qatar Unified English Schools Sports (QUESS). Through these memberships, DES participates competitively in Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Swimming, Rounders, Basketball and Football both in Dukhan and Doha. All students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities that complement the academic curriculum and help them develop skills outside the classroom. These extra-curricular activities include sporting clubs, public speaking, chess, the Duke of Edinburgh International Award scheme and Young Adventurers. DES welcomes pupils at any time during the school year. However it is preferable to register new pupils for the start of the academic year. |
